Video coding standards

H.263
H.263 is a video coding scheme which is standardized by ITU-T (International
Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Sector), drafted for low bit
rate applications such as video conference and video telephony. It has
similar motion compensation, DCT transform and entropy coding with MPEG-1/2. |

MPEG-4
MPEG-4 Visual Coding standard is standardized by ISO/IEC (International
Standardization Organization/ International Electrotechnical Commission)
based on H.263. However, MPEG-4 is more powerful with its better compression
efficiency, higher error resiliency and scalability. |

H.264/AVC
H.264/ MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC) is the latest video coding standard jointly
developed by the VCEG (Video Coding Experts Group) of ITU-T and MPEG (Moving
Picture Experts Group) of ISO/IEC. With same visual quality, PSNR (Peak
Signal-to-Noise Ratio), H.264 offers 50% greater compression rate than H.263
and MPEG-4, and it removes transform mismatch between encoder and decoder.
It also obtains network friendly structure and offers enhanced error
concealment tool. |
